Vienna Philharmonic
The Vienna Philharmonic – Your Classic Investment!
It’s new every year, but we already know: The Vienna Philharmonic in all its variations will be more popular than almost any other coin again in 2021. First offered for sale in 1989 and a golden classic for more than 30 years now, it has become an indispensable part of Schoeller Münzhandel’s product range. The coin that was designed by the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver, Thomas Pesendorfer, is a tribute to Vienna’s incomparable musical heritage. The obverse side, which has remained unchanged since 1989, features various instruments from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The reverse side shows the famous organ from the Goldener Saal of the Viennese Musikverein as well as the most important numbers such as nominal value, fineness and year of issue.
The Philharmonic in Detail
Austria’s most popular coin has the highest possible fineness of 999.9 – i.e. pure gold (or silver since 2008, platinum since 2016). 1 ounce is equivalent to 31.1 grams, and this is the largest and bestselling unit in this segment. It is offered alongside the 1/25-ounce, 1/10-ounce, 1/4-ounce, and 1/2-ounce versions. The Philharmonic is currently the only investment coin that is legal tender in Austria. In 2002, its nominal value was changed from schillings to euros. Since 1989, this coin in fine gold and fine silver has been playing first violin in the coin sector year after year. It is by far Europe’s most successful golden investment coin, and according to the World Gold Council, it has been the top-selling gold coin worldwide for several years in a row. Interesting fact: To this day, the Vienna Philharmonic is the only European investment coin with a face value in euros.
